Ten years ago I initiated a programme at Brettonwood High School called the “Bike Hike.” The programme involves working with underachieving teenagers, helping them to acquire a learner’s licence and teaching them to ride a motorcycle responsibly.I have used this project annually as an incentive for the teens to improve their behaviour & academics, but more importantly, to help give them a sense of worth through acquiring necessary life skills.
Life Skills
- Attitude
- Goalsetting
- Reaching your full potential
- Dealing with Disapointment
- Responsibility
- Aids & HIV Awareness
- Principles & Values
Over a 1 month period the teenagers are taught these life skills and are also actively involved in planning a week-end bike trip during which time these skills are put into practice. 2 Adult riders accompany these tours to ensure that all safety requirements are met
